About the Programme

Are you interested in contemporary visual culture?

Are you fascinated by the expression of our world in visual forms, from art, design, exhibitions and film to fashion, TV and phone apps?

What do images tell us about society today and yesterday?

How does visual culture shape our identities?

How is research on visual culture developed in work places today?

If these questions interest you, the BA Contemporary Visual Culture is for you.

On the BA programme students study the world of images today through its histories, theories and philosophies.

The BA Contemporary Visual Culture is a three-year, level 8 honours degree Programme. It is taught in the art school environment of the Dublin School of Creative Arts, Dublin Institute of Technology at our Grangegorman campus, Dublin 7.

Students of Contemporary Visual Culture learn about the production, history and mediation of contemporary visual culture across the fields of art, design, cinema, photography, print, publishing and digital media today.

There are lectures and seminars from the DIT teaching team, talks from practicing professionals, site visits to archives, libraries, museums, galleries and other visual culture industries

There is a work placement option in a visual culture industry for every second year student. Please click here: Placements in Industry, for further information.

There is also opportunity to study abroad on an Erasmus programme.

In final year, each student completes a thesis project developed from a self-directed study interest. The final year group also organise a public event about contemporary visual culture. Please click here: Sample Project Work, for further information on some recent student projects and theses topics.
